Our Grice Personal Ancestral File

The name GRICE is an old English word which means ' a small wild boar' and a grice actually appears, we are told, on the Richard lll coat of arms. However, research has found that it could mean a grey-haired old man'. So the conclusion may be that, our ancestor was 'a fine old gentleman who hunted wild boar with the Royalty,or, a farmer who kept pigs. Who cares!.

Our immediate family now lives in the Saddleworth area but our forefathers came from the Liverpool/St.Helens district where most of the men were miners working in the pits like CLOCK FACE. Nearly all the men played football including my father.Because most of the family originated from that area, we are reliant on societies  like the Liverpool S W Lancs FHS

Robert & Elizabeth Ann Grice

CIMG0422.JPG(45571 bytes) Robert played football for many teams, including Southport & Oldham Athletic, as a full professional. Robert passed away in August 2004 aged 97. He was born on April the 12th 1907.

On Tuesday 8th February 2005 our family went to St Patrick's church in Oldham for a service of Remembrance in memory of loved ones who passed away in the last year. The service was conducted by six ministers of various denominations assisted by members of the Oldham Co-operative Funeral Service.
It was quite an experience being part of a group of more than 400 people, who were remembering their loved ones and it left you with a good feeling that, in our modern lives, we still turn back to a place of worship for comfort.

REMEMBER

In this past year so many died
and in that year, the loved ones cried
We stood in church, all side by side.
This was the time. Remember

We stood, we prayed, the names were read.
The hymns were sung, the sermons said
hold out your hands and look ahead
But don't forget. Remember

The men in our family were not the only ones to play football. Emma Grice (dad's sister) play in goal for Dick Kerr Ladies International team behind players like Alice Woods & Lily Parr, who is on the Roll of Honour at the Football Museum at Preston. Further information about this team can be obtained from St Helens connections or A story about the Dick.Kerr Ladies
