Norman & Violet Tilburn | |
The name, TILBURN, is relatively uncommon in a large part of the British Isles but our research shows that a great number of Tilburns came from the North part of Yorkshire and were mainly farmers or farmworkers. One explanation of the name could be that it refers to "A person born to a tiller (a person who tills the land)". If anyone can give any other explanation, please do so by emailing the author. Norman and Violet were the parents of the author's wife, Mavis, and they both worked in the cotton industry. For approximately 17 years, they were caretakers of the Methodist Sunday School in Roundthorn, Oldham and on Christmas Eve 1944, Violet heard the air-raid warnings and went into Mavis's bedroom to arouse her. They both thought that they heard a loud motor-bike outside so they looked through the window. It wasn't a motor-bike but a German V-1 Rocket passing over at less that 100 feet. It hit and destroyed 18 houses in Abbeyhills Rd. killing 32 people and injuring 49 more. Another 91 houses were seriously damaged. Civil Defence workers searching for victims at Abeyhills Rd |
